UN Rights Probe: Israel Accused of Genocide in Gaza

The United Nations’ top independent investigators have accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, alleging that its military actions aim to destroy the Palestinian population. The explosive charge, detailed in a 70-page report released Tuesday, was immediately rejected by Israel as biased and “serving Hamas’s narrative.”

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry led by Navi Pillay and Chris Sidoti, appointed by the Human Rights Council concluded that Israel committed four of the five genocidal acts defined in the 1948 Genocide Convention. These included large-scale killings, causing severe physical and mental harm, deliberately imposing life conditions designed to destroy Palestinians, and preventing births.

Pillay said the findings showed “clear genocidal intent,” pointing to starvation, siege tactics, destruction of healthcare and education, and “explicit statements” from Israeli leaders denigrating Palestinians. The panel further accused Israeli forces of targeting children, ignoring International Court of Justice orders, and carrying out sexual and gender-based violence.

Nearly one million civilians remain trapped in Gaza City, where famine is confirmed and bombardments continue, according to UN aid agency OCHA. The report warned that Israel’s total blockade of humanitarian aid and displacement orders have created “inhumane survival conditions.”

Israel’s UN Ambassador in Geneva, Danny Meron, dismissed the report as “cherry-picked,” claiming it demonized Israel without evidence and downplayed Hamas’s October 2023 attacks that sparked the war.

The commission urged all states to act immediately under international law to halt the alleged genocide. “Silence is complicity,” Pillay said. “Every country is legally obliged to stop what is happening in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, tensions spilled beyond Gaza after Israel struck a Hamas stronghold in Qatar last week, killing five Hamas members and one civilian. The attack in Doha drew sharp condemnation from the UN, with Secretary-General António Guterres calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatari sovereignty. UN political chief Rosemary DiCarlo warned the strike threatens regional stability and undermines efforts to secure peace and free hostages.

The Human Rights Council has scheduled an urgent debate on the crisis as global pressure mounts for accountability and immediate humanitarian relief.
