South Africa’s upcoming tour of Pakistan will see major changes to their squads, with captain Temba Bavuma ruled out of the Test series due to injury and veteran wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock making a surprise comeback in the limited-overs formats.

Bavuma Sidelined with Calf Strain

Bavuma, who leads South Africa in Test cricket, has suffered a calf strain that will keep him out of action for at least six to eight weeks. The setback came during the team’s recent white-ball matches in England, and it means he will miss the entire two-Test series starting 12 October in Lahore.

In his absence, Aiden Markram has been handed the captaincy for the red-ball side. South Africa have named four spinners for the subcontinental conditions, though senior bowler Keshav Maharaj will only be fit in time for the second Test.

De Kock Back in the Fold

The other big talking point is the return of Quinton de Kock. The 31-year-old had retired from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, but the selectors have persuaded him to return for both the ODI and T20I series in Pakistan. His inclusion adds depth and experience to a youthful squad, and his comeback comes at a crucial time as South Africa begin to shape plans for the 2026 T20 World Cup and 2027 ODI World Cup.

What’s at Stake

South Africa open their World Test Championship defence in Lahore, before heading to Karachi for the second Test. The three ODIs and three T20Is that follow will provide vital opportunities for the team to test its depth and new leadership structure across formats.

While Bavuma’s absence leaves a big hole in the batting and leadership, de Kock’s return brings renewed confidence for the white-ball squads. For South Africa, this tour is more than just another overseas assignment — it’s a chance to prove resilience under pressure.
