PPP Walks Out of NA Over CM Maryam Nawaz’s Speech: ’We’ll Move to Opposition Benches’

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) staged a walkout from the National Assembly in protest against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s recent remarks.

During the session chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, PPP’s Naveed Qamar said: “We don’t need ministries or positions, but at least show us respect. If such an attitude continues, it will be difficult for us to sit on treasury benches — we may move to the opposition side.”

Flood Relief Dispute

Qamar expressed disappointment over Maryam Nawaz’s speech, saying: “The country is facing devastating floods, people are looking towards leadership. What does ‘our water’ mean? Show respect and think of the people.”

Opposition members, including PTI lawmakers, welcomed PPP to join them on opposition benches and thumped desks in support.

Govt’s Response

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar responded: “This is our internal matter; opposition should not be happy.” He later apologized to PPP members, saying: “If anyone felt hurt, I regret it. Politics often sees heated moments, but this will be resolved within the house.”

Background

PPP had earlier urged the federal government to appeal for international aid for flood victims and extend relief through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

However, addressing a ceremony in Faisalabad, Maryam Nawaz criticized PPP’s stance, saying: “I don’t need anyone’s permission to serve the people. Not everything can be solved through BISP. The culture of begging must end.”

She added: “If Punjab wants to secure its rightful share of canals, why should others object? The people of Punjab don’t need permission to claim their rights.”
