The Trump administration has quietly ended the production of the Arctic Report Card, a long-standing scientific assessment that tracked climate change markers across the polar region. The decision marks a sharp departure from two decades of federal climate monitoring, leaving researchers without a centralized government summary of the region’s rapidly changing environment.

The report, typically released every December at the American Geophysical Union meeting, provided a standardized look at sea ice extent, surface air temperatures, and permafrost degradation. Federal scientists used the document to signal shifts in the Arctic ecosystem that directly impact global weather patterns and rising sea levels.

“We’ve lost the primary dashboard for the fastest-warming place on Earth,” said one federal climate scientist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to internal directives. “It wasn’t just a collection of data; it was a tool for policymakers to see exactly how fast the ground is moving under our feet.”

The move follows a broader internal review of environmental programs initiated by the incoming administration, aimed at reducing what officials describe as “redundant reporting.” While the White House maintains that raw data will remain accessible through individual agency databases, critics argue that stripping away the synthesized analysis effectively hides the severity of the climate crisis from the public eye.

For nearly 20 years, the Arctic Report Card served as an early-warning system. It tracked the “greening” of the tundra and the thinning of multi-year ice—indicators that have historically correlated with extreme weather events in the lower 48 states. By dismantling the report, the administration removes a high-profile, peer-reviewed document that often compelled political action.

The decision is already reverberating through the scientific community. Independent research groups and international partners, who relied on the report to calibrate their own climate modeling, are now scrambling to fill the void.

Without this annual synthesis, the data remains scattered across disparate federal servers. For the public and lawmakers, the clear, accessible narrative of a warming Arctic has effectively been silenced.
