Experts issue alarming warning as Bangladesh faces potential 9-magnitude earthquake threat; half of Dhaka could collapse, say scientists
Bangladesh’s geologists have sounded a strong warning about the country’s increasing risk of a major earthquake, highlighting that its location on multiple tectonic plate boundaries makes it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in South Asia. Experts say that a powerful tremor could strike at any time, posing a severe threat to densely populated areas such as Dhaka.
According to Professor Syed Humayun Akhter, the country’s geological structure significantly raises the likelihood of strong seismic activity. He emphasized that Bangladesh lies at the intersection of the Indian, Eurasian, and Burmese plates — a convergence zone known for intense underground pressure that could release a destructive quake.
Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) warned that many high-rise buildings and residential structures in Dhaka might not meet modern earthquake safety standards. This shortfall, he said, could
