Karachi is set to see light rain and drizzle over the next few hours, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The shift in weather follows a period of lingering humidity that has kept the city’s heat index high since early morning.
The Met Office says a low-pressure system currently sitting over the Arabian Sea is pushing moisture toward the coastal belt. While the forecast doesn’t point to a heavy downpour, the incoming clouds are expected to bring a much-needed dip in temperatures for residents struggling with the ongoing muggy conditions.
For a city that relies on aging infrastructure, even light rain often triggers localized flooding in low-lying areas. Traffic police have already issued advisories for commuters, warning that slick roads during the initial phase of the drizzle could lead to accidents on major arteries like Sharea Faisal and Korangi Industrial Area.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz noted that the system is relatively weak, meaning the cloud cover will likely pass by late evening. He cautioned, however, that the city’s drainage systems remain the primary concern should the drizzle intensify beyond current projections.
The municipal authorities have reportedly put emergency response teams on standby, a standard protocol during any weather shift. Despite these precautions, the city’s power utility has yet to confirm if they are prepared for the potential impact on the grid, which frequently trips during even minor weather events.
