KARACHI – A man was killed shortly after being released from Karachi Central Jail on Wednesday, police said.
According to officials, the victim, identified as Ameer Bakhsh, was attacked near the jail soon after his release. He was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.
Police said the deceased hailed from Larkana and had married by choice, which had angered his opponents. They were reportedly aware of his release and had ambushed him outside the jail.
“As soon as Ameer Bakhsh stepped out, he was attacked with a knife just a few steps away and killed,” a police official said.
It is worth mentioning that in several cities across Pakistan, marrying by choice instead of following family-arranged traditions is still considered taboo, and incidents of honor killings against such couples are on the rise.
In many cases, even when couples flee their hometowns and settle in other cities, relatives often trace and kill them in the name of honor. Despite legal measures and public awareness efforts, authorities have struggled to curb such crimes nationwide.
