SYDNEY: India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Sydney hospital after sustaining a laceration injury to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia, Indian media reported on Friday.
According to a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer suffered a blow to his left lower rib cage while fielding on October 25. He was immediately taken to a hospital for scans and further medical evaluation.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is currently under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the BCCI said in its statement.
The board added that the BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition.
“The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his daily progress,” the statement added.
Injury during a spectacular fielding effort
The incident occurred when Iyer took a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. However, he landed awkwardly and appeared to injure his rib cage upon impact.
He was seen clutching his side in visible pain before being escorted off the field by medical staff.
Before the injury, Iyer had contributed scores of 11 and 61 in the first two matches of the series, both of which India lost.
India bounce back, Iyer’s recovery timeline uncertain
Despite losing the series 2–1, India finished on a high note with a nine-wicket win in the final ODI, led by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who guided the team to a comfortable chase.
Iyer has since been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia starting October 29. His availability for the ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to begin November 30, remains uncertain and will depend on the pace of his recovery.
