SYDNEY: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after receiving treatment for a spleen laceration sustained during the third ODI against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury last week while attempting a catch to dismiss Alex Carey, landing awkwardly and clutching his side in pain. According to the BCCI, Iyer sustained a blunt abdominal trauma, resulting in a spleen tear and internal bleeding — a condition Indian media described as potentially life-threatening.

“The injury was promptly identified, and bleeding was quickly controlled through a minor medical procedure,” the BCCI statement said. “He has received appropriate treatment, and both the BCCI medical team and specialists in Sydney and India are satisfied with his recovery. He has now been discharged from the hospital.”

Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is medically cleared to travel.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared that he had spoken to Iyer during his recovery.
“When we heard about his injury, I tried to contact him,” Yadav told reporters. “Since Shreyas didn’t have his phone, I reached out to our physio Kamlesh Jain, who confirmed that he was stable. He’s doing much better now — he’s even texting us, which is a good sign.”
