Heavy rains leave one dead as major floods hit Albania

Rivers overflow, farmlands destroyed and families stranded as emergency teams stay on alert

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Continuous torrential rain has triggered severe flooding across several parts of Albania, claiming one life and leaving rural communities struggling with disrupted access and property damage, authorities confirmed Saturday.

Officials reported that a 76-year-old woman in the southeastern municipality of Devoll was found dead after floodwaters began to recede. She had been missing since Friday, and investigators believe powerful currents may have swept her away during peak flooding.

The impact of the rainfall has been especially harsh in southern areas, including the village of Dushar, where around 30 families remain cut off due to blocked roads and deep water. Emergency responders say access remains extremely challenging.

Two major rivers — the Vjosa and the Seman — burst their banks following the downpour, inundating expansive agricultural land and low-lying plains. More than 220 hectares (around 540 acres) are still underwater in the Lezha region, where crops and livestock have suffered heavy losses. Videos shared on social media show submerged houses, flooded fields and residents working desperately to protect their properties.

Defense Minister Pirro Vengu visited the Sarande district on Saturday to review flood damage and coordinate response efforts as authorities work to support affected communities.

Meteorologists warn that rainfall could intensify again in the coming days. Civil Emergency Teams remain on high alert, monitoring water levels and preparing further rescue and relief operations if conditions worsen.
