The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sounded the alarm for Punjab, warning of heavy rainfall across the province as the final monsoon cycle moves in. Officials are bracing for urban flooding, sudden surges in nullahs, and potential structural hazards in vulnerable districts.

The alert covers the next 48 to 72 hours, with the meteorological office tracking a low-pressure system currently pushing across the border. While the monsoon season is statistically winding down, this late-season surge packs enough moisture to trigger flash flooding in areas already saturated by previous weeks of rain.

Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala face the highest risk. City administrators have been ordered to clear drainage systems immediately, though the persistent challenge of clogged storm drains remains a hurdle in the capital.

“We are tracking the system in real-time,” a PDMA spokesperson told reporters this morning. “District teams are on standby, but the next two days will test our infrastructure.”

The authority’s directive includes a mandatory evacuation plan for residents living near seasonal streams—specifically in the Dera Ghazi Khan division—where flash floods have caused significant damage in past years. Emergency services are now operating on a 24-hour shift pattern, with heavy machinery pre-positioned in high-risk zones.

Farmers in the southern districts are also feeling the heat. With the cotton crop at a critical stage, sudden downpours could result in significant yield losses. Agriculture extension officers have issued advisories for drainage in fields, but for many, the damage may be unavoidable if the rainfall intensity hits the projected levels.

The monsoon is expected to retreat by the weekend, leaving behind a brief window of humidity before the October cooling begins. Until then, the focus remains entirely on mitigation.

For residents in low-lying areas, the window for preparation is closing. The PDMA has advised against travel during peak downpours, citing the risk of road collapses and visibility issues on the motorway network.
