Snowdonia’s delicate ecosystem is buckling. A new assessment from conservationists suggests that at least a dozen native species—ranging from rare mosses to ground-nesting birds—are now on the brink of disappearing from Wales’ largest national park entirely.

The park, known as Eryri, has long been a sanctuary for plants and animals that thrive in its unique, high-altitude climate. But rising temperatures and shifting land-use patterns are squeezing these habitats into smaller, isolated pockets. When a species loses its ability to move between these patches, local extinction becomes a matter of when, not if.

“We aren’t just talking about a decline in numbers,” said a lead ecologist familiar with the park’s biodiversity data. “We are talking about the total collapse of specific populations that have called these peaks home for centuries.”

The chough, a bird once synonymous with the Welsh coastline and upland crags, is among those struggling. Its nesting sites are increasingly encroached upon by both human activity and changing vegetation, making successful breeding seasons rare. Meanwhile, rare arctic-alpine plants, lingering since the last ice age, are being outcompeted by hardier species that can now survive at higher elevations as the air warms.

The park authority faces a difficult balancing act. Tourism drives the local economy, but the foot traffic on popular trails is directly contributing to soil erosion and the disturbance of fragile nesting grounds.

“The landscape is changing faster than the wildlife can adapt,” the ecologist added. “If we keep treating these mountains as an infinite playground, we’re going to lose the very thing that makes them special.”

While restoration projects are underway—including peatland rewetting and invasive species removal—the scale of the challenge is massive. The survival of these species now hinges on whether the park can prioritize biological recovery over unrestricted access, a trade-off that few are prepared to fully endorse.

The silence in the high crags is growing, and for several of Snowdonia’s most vulnerable inhabitants, the window for intervention is closing.
