Cambridge sets June 9 for AS-Level Math retake after social media leak

Cambridge International is forcing thousands of students back into exam halls on June 9 to retake the AS-Level Mathematics Paper 12. The decision follows a security breach where the original paper was “prematurely shared” on social media—specifically across platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook—hours before the scheduled exam in May.

The board’s pivot to a mandatory retake marks a sharp reversal. Initially, Cambridge officials suggested they might use “assessed marks”—a statistical calculation based on performance in other components—to fill the gap. That plan was scrapped after the scale of the leak became clear. Maintaining the “integrity of the qualification” won out over student convenience.

For students in Pakistan, the timing couldn’t be worse. Many had already packed away their AS-level books to focus on A2 preparations or university entrance exams. Now, they have less than a week to return to peak testing form.

“It’s a mess,” said one private candidate in Karachi who asked not to be named. “We finished the paper, felt good about it, and now we’re being punished for a leak we didn’t cause. Studying for the same exam twice in one month is exhausting.”

The retake is strictly for Paper 12 (9709/12). Cambridge confirmed that other mathematics components and subjects remain unaffected. Schools received the directive late last week, sparking a logistical scramble to re-register candidates and secure exam centers for a Sunday session.

The British Council, which oversees the administration of these exams in Pakistan, will handle the June 9 session. While Cambridge hasn’t detailed exactly how the leak happened, the board told schools it’s investigating the “source of the unauthorized disclosure.”

This isn’t the first time Cambridge has faced such hurdles in the region. Recent years have seen exams canceled due to political unrest, but a leak of this magnitude is a rare hit to the board’s reputation for ironclad security.

Students who miss the June 9 retake won’t get another chance this session. Their only option would be to sit the exam again in the November series—a delay that could derail university applications. For now, the message from Cambridge is clear: show up on Sunday or lose the grade.
