Azra Fazal Pechuho has directed hospitals across Sindh to ensure strict hygiene standards and full compliance with medical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in an effort to improve patient safety and healthcare conditions.

During recent inspections and meetings with health officials, the Sindh Health Minister emphasized that cleanliness, infection control, and proper medical protocols must be treated as top priorities in both public and private healthcare facilities. She reportedly warned that negligence in maintaining hygiene standards could place patients’ health at serious risk.

Officials said hospitals have been instructed to improve sanitation systems, ensure regular cleaning of wards and emergency areas, properly manage medical waste, and maintain hygienic conditions for patients, staff, and visitors. Authorities were also told to ensure doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers strictly follow SOPs during treatment and patient care.

The minister stressed that hospitals should remain fully prepared to handle increasing patient loads while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and operational discipline. She also highlighted the importance of infection prevention measures, particularly in emergency wards, operation theaters, and intensive care units.

Health experts say strict hygiene practices are essential for preventing hospital-acquired infections, improving patient recovery, and strengthening public confidence in healthcare institutions. Medical professionals have long argued that overcrowding, poor sanitation, and weak enforcement of SOPs remain major challenges in parts of Pakistan’s healthcare system.

The directive comes as health authorities across the country continue focusing on improving hospital management, patient safety, and healthcare infrastructure. Officials indicated that monitoring mechanisms could be strengthened to ensure hospitals follow government-issued health regulations more effectively.

Social media users and healthcare advocates largely welcomed the move, saying stronger oversight and accountability are necessary to improve standards in public hospitals and ensure safer treatment environments for patients.
