LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underwent a “major surgery” at a private hospital in Lahore, senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed on Thursday, adding that the chief minister is now recovering steadily.
According to Maryum Aurangzeb, the procedure was carried out at Sharif Medical City Hospital. Although officials did not disclose the exact medical details, local media reports suggested the surgery was related to a throat condition that had reportedly been troubling the Punjab chief minister for some time.
Despite being hospitalized, Maryam Nawaz continued monitoring important government affairs, the minister said. She remained in contact with provincial officials and reviewed Eid-related arrangements, including sanitation drives, security measures and administrative operations across Punjab.
“Even during treatment, she stayed connected with matters concerning public welfare and governance,” Aurangzeb said while speaking to reporters.
The news prompted reactions from political leaders and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supporters, many of whom offered prayers for her health and speedy recovery. Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja also extended her good wishes and prayed for Maryam Nawaz’s early return to full health.
This is not the first time the Punjab chief minister has undergone medical treatment for throat-related complications. In 2023, she traveled to Geneva for surgery after doctors diagnosed issues involving her vocal glands. Party leaders at the time had described the operation as successful.
Sources familiar with the matter said Maryam Nawaz has now been discharged from the hospital and shifted home after remaining under observation for a brief period. Doctors have reportedly advised her to rest for the next few days.
The development comes as the Punjab government continues its focus on administrative reforms, inflation-control initiatives and public service delivery across the province.
