Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-784 turned back to Toronto Pearson International Airport shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, following a fire alarm warning in the cockpit. The flight, bound for Lahore, was carrying over 200 passengers when the crew detected smoke in the cargo hold.

The pilot immediately declared an emergency and requested an unscheduled landing. Air traffic control cleared the runway, and emergency services were stationed on the tarmac as a precaution. The aircraft landed safely at 3:15 p.m. local time, with no injuries reported among the passengers or the flight crew.

“The safety of our passengers is our top priority,” a PIA spokesperson said in a brief statement. “The crew followed standard operating procedures, and the aircraft is currently undergoing a thorough inspection by our engineering team.”

Engineers are investigating the source of the smoke alarm. While initial reports suggest it may have been a sensor malfunction, the airline has grounded the Boeing 777 to determine if there was an actual fire or a technical glitch in the detection system.

Passengers were deplaned and provided with hotel accommodations in Toronto. The airline says it is working to arrange a replacement aircraft for the journey to Lahore, though it has not provided a firm departure time.

For many aboard, the flight was a standard commute turned into a high-stakes ordeal. One passenger, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the cabin environment as calm but tense as the pilot announced the return to Toronto.

This incident follows a string of maintenance-related challenges for the national carrier, which has been struggling with a aging fleet and financial constraints. While the airline maintains that its safety protocols remain strict, the grounding of this aircraft adds another layer of operational uncertainty for the carrier’s North American routes.

The airline expects to provide an update on the flight’s status once the technical inspection concludes. Until then, the aircraft remains sidelined on the tarmac at Pearson.
