The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved the mandatory introduction of a three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence (AI) course for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in public and private universities across Pakistan, starting from the Fall 2026 academic session.
According to the HEC directive, the course will provide students with fundamental knowledge of AI, its applications across various fields, and key ethical considerations, including data privacy, transparency, fairness, and accountability. Universities have been instructed to integrate the course into their curricula without delay.
The commission stated that AI education is no longer optional in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. The initiative aims to equip students with digital skills and practical understanding of emerging technologies, helping them compete in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
HEC has allowed institutions flexibility in designing the course, enabling them to offer it as an elective, interdisciplinary subject, or supporting course within existing degree programmes. Universities may also tailor content according to their academic disciplines and programme requirements.
Education experts have welcomed the move, saying it will enhance students’ technological literacy, improve employability, and prepare graduates for future challenges in education, healthcare, business, governance, and other sectors increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.
