Islamabad: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced that the Sahito gas discovery has officially been brought into production, marking a significant development for Pakistan’s energy sector and efforts to enhance domestic gas supplies.
According to the company, the commencement of production from the Sahito field is expected to contribute additional natural gas to the national energy network, helping meet growing demand from households, industries, and power generation facilities.
OGDCL officials stated that the project reflects the company’s commitment to exploring and developing indigenous hydrocarbon resources to reduce reliance on imported energy. The successful transition from discovery to production is also expected to support the country’s broader energy security objectives.
Energy experts say new gas production is particularly important as Pakistan continues to face challenges related to energy shortages, rising fuel import costs, and increasing consumption. Additional domestic supplies can help ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves and improve the overall energy mix.
The company noted that development work at the field was completed in line with operational plans, allowing production activities to begin after the necessary technical and regulatory requirements were fulfilled.
Industry analysts view the development as a positive step for Pakistan’s upstream energy sector, highlighting the importance of continued exploration and investment to unlock the country’s untapped hydrocarbon potential.
