A new medical study has revealed that omega-3 supplements derived from fish oil or algae are not effective in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or memory decline.
According to the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Hussein Yassine, a neurologist at the University of Southern California, a clinical trial found no significant improvement in memory, cognitive function, or protection of brain cells among individuals who used omega-3 supplements.
Dr. Yassine said that adopting a healthy lifestyle is more effective than relying solely on supplements. He noted that regular exercise, stress reduction, quality sleep, a balanced plant-based diet, and natural sources of omega-3 such as fatty fish, nuts, and seeds play an important role in maintaining brain health.
He further stated that better brain health observed in Mediterranean populations is not linked solely to omega-3 intake, but also to an overall healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and lower stress levels.
