PARIS — Jean-Luc Brunel, the disgraced French modeling scout who spent years at the center of a sprawling sex-trafficking investigation linked to Jeffrey Epstein, was found dead in his Paris prison cell early Saturday. He was 75.

Prison authorities discovered Brunel hanging in his cell at La Santé prison shortly before 2 a.m. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the death, noting that an investigation into the cause of death is underway. A suicide note was reportedly found at the scene.

Brunel had been in custody since December 2020. He faced multiple charges of rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking involving minors. Investigators accused him of scouting young women for the modeling industry—only to facilitate their abuse by Epstein and other wealthy associates.

The allegations against Brunel were a critical pillar in the French judicial probe into Epstein’s network. Victims, including those represented by the organization *Innocence en Danger*, accused him of using his agency, Karin Models, to lure teenagers from Eastern Europe and elsewhere with promises of high-fashion careers.

“He was the architect of the trap,” one former model told investigators during the pre-trial hearings. “He didn’t just scout us; he sold us.”

Brunel consistently denied the accusations, maintaining that his relationship with Epstein was purely professional and that he was unaware of the financier’s criminal activities. His legal team had filed several unsuccessful requests for his release over the past year, citing his deteriorating health and the slow pace of the judicial process.

His death effectively ends the criminal prosecution against him in France. For the victims, the news brings a bitter, incomplete conclusion to a decade-long pursuit of justice.

“He died before he could face a jury,” said a lawyer representing several of the plaintiffs. “The truth he held about those who enabled this network dies with him.”

The French Ministry of Justice has ordered an internal administrative inquiry into the security protocols at La Santé, a standard procedure following a death in custody. As the investigation into the broader Epstein network continues in both the U.S. and Europe, Brunel’s silence ensures that the full extent of his collaboration with the late financier may never be fully documented in a court of law.
