Pakistan’s nationwide fuel supply remains secure for now. The Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) officially called off its planned strike Tuesday night, citing “productive” negotiations with the federal government.

The decision brings a sudden end to the uncertainty that had gripped motorists across the country since Monday. By Tuesday evening, long queues had begun to form at pumps in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, as residents braced for a potential dry spell.

The breakthrough followed an emergency session between the association’s leadership and the Petroleum Minister. While the government has yet to release a formal policy document, representatives for the dealers confirmed that the ministry provided written assurances regarding their core grievances.

At the heart of the standoff was the industry’s demand for a higher profit margin. Dealers have argued for months that their current margins are unsustainable, particularly given the rising cost of electricity and high operational overheads. They had threatened to shut down operations indefinitely starting Thursday if the government didn’t agree to a significant increase in their commission per liter.

“We have received a firm commitment that our demands are being processed,” said a spokesperson for the PPDA shortly after the meeting. “We don’t want to cause public distress, but we cannot run businesses at a loss.”

The government, wary of the economic fallout from a nationwide fuel shortage, took a more conciliatory tone than in previous standoffs. Ministry officials acknowledged the dealers’ concerns regarding inflation but stopped short of announcing specific percentage hikes in commissions, promising instead to revisit the pricing structure in the upcoming fiscal review.

For now, the pumps will stay open. However, the truce is fragile. If the promised review fails to materialize or if the proposed margin increase falls short of industry expectations, the threat of a nationwide shutdown will likely return to the table.

For the average commuter, the immediate crisis is over. But the underlying tension between the dealers and the state suggests that the next round of negotiations will be just as contentious.
