The Louvre reopened its doors to the public Thursday morning, barely 48 hours after a daylight heist saw three 18th-century diamond-encrusted brooches vanish from the Richelieu wing. Security remains tight, with guards stationed at every junction, as the museum attempts to restore a sense of normalcy to its most visited galleries.

The theft, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, exploited a momentary lapse in the museum’s sensor grid. While the Paris police have yet to confirm the total value of the stolen items, insurance experts suggest the collection—part of the Crown Jewels of France—is worth upwards of $12 million.

“The investigation is moving at pace,” said Paris Police Commissioner Marc Dupont, standing outside the museum’s main entrance. “We are reviewing over 400 hours of footage and interviewing staff who were in the wing during the lockout period. We have leads, but we aren’t discussing them yet.”

For the thousands of tourists waiting in the courtyard, the reopening brought relief, though the atmosphere inside was noticeably tense. Several smaller galleries adjacent to the crime scene remain cordoned off with heavy velvet ropes, and the museum has implemented a new mandatory bag-check policy at every internal checkpoint.

The heist has sparked a fierce debate over the Louvre’s security infrastructure. Critics argue that the museum’s reliance on aging laser-grid technology made it a target for professional thieves who knew exactly when the systems were scheduled for maintenance.

“This wasn’t a smash-and-grab,” said security consultant Sarah Vane. “This was surgical. They bypassed the silent alarms and walked out before the guards even realized the display case had been breached. It’s a massive wake-up call for every major institution in Europe.”

Museum director Laurence des Cars remained tight-lipped regarding the specific security failures during a brief press conference Wednesday. She focused instead on the “sanctity of the institution,” insisting that the remaining artifacts are safer now than they have been in decades.

As of noon today, the museum reported near-capacity attendance. Visitors are still flocking to the Mona Lisa, but the Richelieu wing’s empty display cases serve as a stark reminder of the breach. The police investigation is ongoing, with no word yet on whether the brooches have been traced or if the thieves are still within the country.
