Three suspected members of the Samad Kathiawari gang were killed during a targeted operation by the Sindh Rangers in Karachi early Tuesday.

The exchange of fire occurred in the city’s Lyari area, a longstanding stronghold for various criminal syndicates. Rangers officials confirmed the suspects were involved in multiple cases of extortion, targeted killings, and kidnapping for ransom.

Intelligence units had been tracking the movement of the trio for several weeks before initiating the raid. When the paramilitary force approached the suspects’ hideout, the individuals opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response from the Rangers.

“The gang had become a primary source of instability for local traders,” a spokesperson for the Rangers said. “We recovered sophisticated weaponry, including submachine guns and hand grenades, from the site.”

The bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations. While law enforcement authorities have identified the men, they have not yet released their full names to the public, citing ongoing investigations into the gang’s wider network.

Extortion remains a persistent challenge for Karachi’s business community. For small shopkeepers in areas like Lyari, gangs like the Kathiawari outfit have frequently used intimidation to collect “protection money,” often threatening violence to ensure compliance.

The operation signals a push by security agencies to break the back of remaining criminal cells in the city’s south. However, the true test lies in whether the arrests and encounters lead to a long-term reduction in organized crime, or if these power vacuums are quickly filled by competing groups.

The Rangers have vowed to continue their intelligence-based operations until the remaining members of the network are neutralized.
