Football’s new generation has taken over the top of the transfer market, with Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland becoming the first players to reach a market valuation of around $250 million.

Following the latest update by German football data platform Transfermarkt after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, both players saw their valuations rise by €20 million to €220 million (around $251 million) each. The two stars now share the position of the world’s most valuable footballers.

Yamal’s valuation has surged after a remarkable period in which the young Spanish star helped his country win the 2026 World Cup. Haaland, meanwhile, also strengthened his market position through his performances for Norway and his continued success at club level.

The rise of the two young stars marks a significant shift in football’s financial landscape. Market valuations increasingly favour players who combine youth, elite performances, long-term potential and strong resale value.

The contrast with football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is particularly striking. Messi’s market value is now estimated at around €15–17 million, while Ronaldo’s is approximately €10–11 million—far below the figures commanded by the new generation.

However, these figures do not represent guaranteed transfer fees. Market valuations are estimates based on factors such as age, current form, contract length, potential and future resale value. A player could ultimately be transferred for more or less than the estimated valuation.

The latest figures highlight a changing era in world football, with young superstars now dominating the transfer market while Messi and Ronaldo continue to maintain their immense sporting and commercial legacies despite their lower market valuations.
