KOTLI: Police arrested two presiding officers in Kotli on Sunday following reports of gross negligence during the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election proceedings. The arrests come amid heightened scrutiny over the integrity of the polling process in the region.

Election Commission officials confirmed that the individuals were taken into custody after they were found to have compromised the sanctity of the ballot. The specific negligence involved the mishandling of sensitive election materials, which triggered an immediate response from local authorities and election observers.

The incident has fueled local tensions. Candidates and their supporters gathered outside the district returning officer’s office earlier today, demanding a transparent investigation into how the polling process was allowed to falter. For the voters in Kotli, the arrests serve as a stark reminder of the fragile nature of the current electoral environment.

“We cannot tolerate any lapse that calls the mandate into question,” a senior official from the provincial election commission said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He confirmed that the commission is currently reviewing the logs from the affected polling stations to determine if the results from those specific areas have been irrevocably tainted.

This isn’t the first time administrative failures have shadowed the AJK polls. Political parties have frequently raised concerns about the neutrality of polling staff, often citing fears of bureaucratic interference. Today’s arrests provide concrete substance to those long-standing allegations, complicating the narrative for the ruling party as they look to secure a majority.

Legal proceedings against the two officers are expected to move quickly. Under the AJK election laws, officials found guilty of tampering or gross negligence face immediate dismissal and potential criminal charges.

As counting continues, the focus is shifting from the ballots to the integrity of the process itself. If the Election Commission decides to declare the results from these specific stations void, it could force a re-poll, potentially altering the final seat tally in a contest where every single vote carries significant weight.
