KUMAMOTO, JAPAN — A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan early today, shaking the historic Kumamoto Castle and causing visible structural damage to the 17th-century landmark.

The tremor, which hit the Kumamoto Prefecture shortly after dawn, sent debris tumbling from the castle’s stone walls and damaged several tiled roof sections of the main keep. Visitors were quickly evacuated as emergency crews cordoned off the area to assess the stability of the fortress, a site rebuilt extensively following the devastating 2016 earthquake that nearly leveled the structure.

City officials confirmed that while the main keep’s structural integrity appears intact for now, the perimeter walls—sections of which were still undergoing restoration from previous seismic events—suffered fresh cracks.

“We are currently verifying the extent of the damage to the stonework,” a municipal spokesperson said. “The priority remains the safety of staff and any visitors on the grounds.”

For the people of Kumamoto, the castle is more than a tourist destination; it serves as a symbol of the city’s resilience. The 2016 disaster saw the collapse of the castle’s iconic stone ramparts, a sight that became the defining image of that earthquake. Years of painstaking, multi-billion yen restoration work had only recently neared completion, with the main keep reopening to the public in 2021.

Geologists have warned that aftershocks are likely over the next 48 hours. While the Japan Meteorological Agency has not issued a tsunami warning, the region remains on high alert as infrastructure checks continue across the prefecture.

For now, the castle gates remain locked. Whether the latest damage will force a long-term closure of the site is a question for the engineers arriving on-site this afternoon.

Until then, the city waits to see if its most famous survivor can withstand yet another test of time.
