Rain swept through Islamabad and several districts across Punjab on Tuesday, signaling the arrival of a new monsoon system that meteorologists expect will persist throughout the week. The downpour offered a sharp departure from the humid, stifling conditions that have gripped the region for the past fortnight.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the arrival of moisture-laden currents from the Arabian Sea. While the showers brought a welcome drop in temperatures, the intensity varied significantly. Islamabad and Rawalpindi saw steady, moderate rainfall by mid-afternoon, while parts of Lahore and Gujranwala experienced brief, localized bursts.

For residents, the change in weather is a reprieve. Daytime highs in the capital, which had been hovering near 38°C, dropped by nearly five degrees within two hours of the clouds breaking.

However, the rapid accumulation of water in urban centers remains a concern. In Rawalpindi, low-lying areas—specifically those near the Leh Nullah—are already being monitored by local administration. Previous monsoon seasons have shown how quickly moderate rainfall can transition into flash flooding in these densely populated zones.

“We are tracking the system’s movement across the upper Punjab corridor,” a duty forecaster at the PMD said. “The intensity is expected to peak over the next 48 hours, with heavier falls likely in the Potohar region and central Punjab.”

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a standard advisory to district administrations, urging them to clear drainage systems ahead of the forecasted heavier spells. While the rain is vital for agricultural health and replenishing local water tables, the infrastructure in major cities remains vulnerable to sudden, heavy precipitation.

Farmers in the region are viewing the shift with cautious optimism. After weeks of dry heat, the moisture is critical for the ongoing paddy crop cycle, provided the rainfall remains steady rather than destructive.

The current system is expected to track eastward by the weekend, though forecasters warn that instability in the atmosphere could trigger intermittent showers through Sunday. For now, the humidity remains high, and the overcast skies suggest that the heatwave conditions are unlikely to return until the system fully clears the province.
