A peregrine falcon, grounded for weeks by a fractured wing, has returned to its nesting site in a rare, high-stakes recovery that wildlife experts say defied the odds.

The bird—known to local monitors as “Blue”—was found grounded near a construction site in early April. Rescuers from the Raptor Rehabilitation Center feared the injury would keep the bird from migrating or, worse, from defending its territory. For a species that relies on speed and precision for survival, a wing injury is often a death sentence.

“We didn’t know if she’d recognize him, or if he’d even remember his spot,” said Sarah Jenkins, the lead rehabilitator who oversaw his three-week recovery. “When we opened the crate, she didn’t fly off. She just landed right next to him. It brought tears to everyone’s eyes.”

The reunion occurred Tuesday morning atop a decommissioned water tower, a site the pair has occupied for three consecutive seasons. Observers watching through long-range lenses reported the female falcon vocalizing almost immediately upon the male’s release. Within minutes, the pair was seen perched together, preening—a sign of social bonding that surprised even the most seasoned birders.

Peregrines are fiercely territorial. Once an individual is absent from a nest for more than a few days, rivals typically move in to claim the space. That this male reclaimed his perch without a fight suggests the pair’s bond remains unusually strong.

Despite the successful release, the road ahead remains difficult. The falcon’s wing healed well, but the flight muscles have lost mass during his time in the aviary. Jenkins and her team will continue to monitor the site through the weekend to ensure he can hunt effectively enough to provide for the nest.

For now, the pair remains localized, a rare victory in an urban environment where falcon mortality rates are climbing due to window strikes and pesticide exposure.

“Nature usually doesn’t give second chances,” Jenkins said. “This time, it did.”
