Newcastle United have strengthened their squad by completing the signing of Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese club Braga. The Premier League side activated the 24-year-old’s €30 million release clause, with the transfer reportedly worth around £25.7 million ($34.6 million).
Hornicek has signed a five-year contract, becoming Newcastle’s fifth arrival during the current transfer window. The highly-rated goalkeeper is expected to compete for, and potentially take over, the number one spot from Nick Pope.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Hornicek expressed his excitement about joining the club. He said it had been an emotional few days and added that he is eager to experience the atmosphere at St James’ Park in front of Newcastle’s passionate supporters.
Sporting director Ross Wilson welcomed the signing, describing Hornicek as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in European football. He said the club believes the Czech international has the qualities needed to strengthen the squad for the future.
The transfer comes during a challenging period for Newcastle. Eddie Howe recently stepped down as manager after five years in charge, while the club has also seen several key departures this summer. Midfielder Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham, Anthony Gordon has completed a move to Barcelona, and captain Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with a transfer to Arsenal.
