Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered district administrations to mobilize immediate relief efforts as torrential monsoon rains continue to inundate low-lying areas across the province. The directive came during a review meeting held at the CM House on Tuesday, where officials reported rising water levels and power outages in several districts.

The provincial government is shifting focus from routine monitoring to emergency response. Urban centers, particularly Karachi and Hyderabad, have faced localized flooding, while rural districts in interior Sindh are reporting damage to mud houses and standing crops. The CM has directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to deploy extra pumps and rescue teams to clear stagnant water from main arteries.

“Loss of life and property is unacceptable,” Shah told provincial ministers and commissioners during the briefing. He ordered the immediate release of funds to help local authorities procure emergency supplies, including food rations and medical kits for displaced families.

Critics and opposition leaders have pointed to the recurring nature of the crisis, noting that pre-monsoon desilting of drains—a perennial promise—has once again fallen short. While the government maintains that the intensity of this year’s rainfall exceeds historical averages, residents in flooded neighborhoods are struggling with sewage backups and lack of access to basic services.

Meteorological data indicates more heavy rain is expected over the next 48 hours, keeping the provincial administration on high alert. The irrigation department has been instructed to keep a constant watch on embankments and water levels in the Indus River to prevent breaches in vulnerable zones.

For now, the CM’s office is waiting on detailed damage assessments from deputy commissioners. Until those reports are filed, the focus remains on keeping the main transport routes open and ensuring hospitals are stocked to handle an expected surge in waterborne diseases.
