KARACHI — A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest near the Karachi Press Club has paralyzed traffic across the city’s downtown core, leaving thousands of commuters stranded during the evening rush hour.

The demonstration, organized to protest against local government policies and recent political arrests, began in the early afternoon. By 4:00 p.m., heavy containers and police barricades had effectively sealed off major arteries leading toward the Saddar area, forcing traffic onto narrow, residential side streets already clogged with congestion.

For the average commuter, the impact is immediate. Public transport routes have been diverted, and ride-sharing apps are showing surge pricing as drivers refuse to enter the gridlock surrounding the protest site.

“I’ve been stuck near I.I. Chundrigar Road for over an hour,” said Aslam Khan, a bank employee trying to reach his home in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. “There’s no movement, no police guidance, and no way out.”

PTI leadership, speaking from a makeshift stage atop a shipping container, claimed the turnout proves public resentment against the current administration. They have vowed to maintain the sit-in until their demands regarding the release of detained party workers are met.

Police presence remains heavy, with riot units stationed at all entry points to the Press Club. While the atmosphere has remained tense, authorities have largely opted for containment rather than dispersal, aiming to prevent the protest from spilling over into the commercial heart of the city.

This isn’t the first time the Press Club has become a bottleneck for Karachi’s infrastructure. The location’s proximity to key government offices and major traffic intersections makes it a strategic choice for protesters—and a recurring nightmare for city planners.

As darkness falls, the standoff shows little sign of breaking. With no clear timeline for the protest to conclude, the gridlock is expected to worsen as the night shift begins and more vehicles flood the already choked streets.

For now, the city’s main arteries remain blocked, leaving thousands to wait out a protest that has effectively shut down the heartbeat of Karachi’s downtown.
