JASPER, Alberta — The wildfire tearing through Jasper National Park has doubled in size over the last 24 hours, forcing the immediate evacuation of the town’s 5,000 residents and thousands of tourists.

The blaze, fueled by relentless winds and tinder-dry conditions, breached the town’s perimeter Wednesday evening. Parks Canada confirmed the fire is now moving uncontrollably through the valley, leaving officials scrambling to clear Highway 16—the primary escape route.

For residents, the order came with almost no warning. By the time the evacuation signal blared across the valley, smoke had already turned the afternoon sky a bruised, apocalyptic orange.

“We didn’t have time to pack,” said Sarah Miller, a local business owner who fled toward Edmonton. “You grab your pets, your keys, and you look in the rearview mirror. Everything else is just stuff.”

The fire’s rapid expansion caught even seasoned firefighters off guard. While crews spent the week digging firebreaks and deploying sprinklers, the erratic wind gusts essentially bypassed these defenses. The flames are now consuming the dense, beetle-killed pine forest that surrounds the townsite, creating a heat intensity that makes direct suppression impossible.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the situation “heartbreaking” during a press briefing, but the province’s focus remains on logistics. With thousands of vehicles clogging the narrow mountain pass, the threat isn’t just the fire—it’s the bottleneck.

This disaster hits at the peak of the tourist season. Thousands of visitors, many international travelers, are now stranded in secondary reception centers as far away as Hinton and Edson. The town, which serves as the heart of Canada’s Rockies, is now a ghost town under an evacuation mandate that could last weeks.

Fire crews are currently shifting their strategy from containment to structural protection, though the sheer scale of the inferno means many historic buildings are likely already lost.

As night falls, the glow from the mountainside is visible for miles. The fight isn’t over, but for the people of Jasper, the town they left behind this morning may not be there when the smoke finally clears.
