The Kentish Glory moth, a species feared extinct in Scotland for seven decades, has been spotted in the wild once again. Conservationists confirmed the discovery this week, marking a significant win for biodiversity efforts in the Cairngorms National Park.

The moth, known for its distinct burnt-orange and white markings, hadn’t been recorded in the region since the early 1950s. Its return suggests that decades of habitat restoration—specifically the replanting of native birch woodlands—are finally paying off.

“It’s a remarkable find,” said a lead field ecologist involved in the survey. “We spent three seasons monitoring these specific patches of birch. To see the species back is testament to the patience required in conservation.”

Experts had long assumed the Scottish population was lost to history, likely pushed out by changing land-use patterns and the loss of natural woodland corridors. The rediscovery isn’t just a fluke; it points to a wider, healthier ecosystem. The Kentish Glory relies on specific host plants, and its presence confirms that these pockets of forest have reached a level of maturity capable of supporting complex insect life.

The moth’s life cycle is notoriously difficult to track. The adults emerge for only a few weeks in the spring, making them elusive even to seasoned researchers. This brief window of activity explains why the population remained hidden for so long, despite regular surveys in the area.

For now, the precise location of the sighting remains undisclosed. Conservation groups want to prevent the area from being overrun by enthusiasts and photographers until the population stabilizes. They are currently working with local landowners to secure the site and ensure the birch groves remain undisturbed.

Whether this small colony can expand into a self-sustaining population is the next hurdle. For a species that spent 70 years in the shadows, simply being back on the map is the hardest step cleared.
