Bushra Bibi, the former first lady of Pakistan, is suffering from a persistent ocular infection that has prompted her legal team to demand urgent medical intervention. Recent medical documents, submitted to the Islamabad High Court, detail a chronic condition that her doctors claim requires specialized care unavailable within the confines of her current detention.

The report, prepared by a private medical board, points to a severe infection in her left eye. The documents describe recurring inflammation and blurred vision, complications that have worsened over the past several weeks. Her legal counsel, Barrister Salman Safdar, argued in court that the lack of consistent follow-up care has allowed the condition to move toward a stage where permanent damage becomes a genuine risk.

Her defense team has used these records to push for a shift in her custody status or, at minimum, an immediate transfer to a facility equipped for ophthalmological surgery. The state, however, maintains that she is receiving standard care and that the request for private treatment is a tactical move rather than a medical necessity.

The timing of these reports has reignited the broader political debate surrounding the health of incarcerated high-profile figures. Supporters of the PTI claim the state is deliberately neglecting her health to exert pressure on her husband, former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Government officials reject this, calling the focus on her medical status a distraction from ongoing legal proceedings.

For now, the court has directed the jail authorities to provide a comprehensive report on the medical facilities currently available to her. Whether that leads to a transfer or a simple change in her prison medication remains the central point of contention.

As the legal proceedings continue, the medical records serve as the latest flashpoint between the defense and the state. The case is set for a follow-up hearing later this week, where the court will decide if the current treatment protocols are sufficient or if her condition necessitates outside intervention.
