Laboratory analysis has flagged 26 popular brands of banaspati ghee for containing excessive trans-fatty acids, far exceeding the safety limits set by national food authorities. The findings, released following a series of random market samples, indicate that these products pose a significant risk to cardiovascular health for millions of consumers who rely on them for daily cooking.

The testing process targeted widely available brands across major urban centers. Analysts found that the levels of partially hydrogenated oils—the primary source of industrial trans-fats—were alarmingly high in brands that are often marketed as “family-friendly” or “premium” quality.

Trans-fats are notorious for raising bad cholesterol (LDL) while simultaneously lowering good cholesterol (HDL). Consistent consumption of these fats is a direct driver of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.

“We aren’t just looking at minor deviations here,” said one food safety expert involved in the audit. “Some of these samples contained trans-fat concentrations double or even triple what is considered acceptable for human consumption. It’s a silent health crisis sitting on kitchen shelves.”

Despite existing regulations requiring manufacturers to cap trans-fat content, enforcement has remained inconsistent. Many producers continue to use low-cost, chemically processed oils to maintain profit margins, disregarding the long-term impact on public health.

The regulatory body behind the testing has issued notices to the companies involved, demanding an immediate halt to the distribution of the affected batches. However, past instances of such crackdowns show that many companies simply rebrand or adjust labeling without changing the underlying chemical composition of their products.

For the average household, the implications are stark. With banaspati ghee serving as a staple in the local diet, the persistent intake of these fats creates a cumulative risk that cannot be undone by occasional exercise or minor dietary tweaks.

As of now, the list of the 26 non-compliant brands is circulating among health advocacy groups, though a full public disclosure by the regulator is still pending. Until clear accountability is enforced, the onus of safety remains—unfairly—on the consumer.
