President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the Banking Mohtasib to ramp up public awareness campaigns, aiming to ensure bank customers know exactly where to turn when their rights are violated.

The President’s push comes as complaints against financial institutions continue to climb. Many account holders remain unaware that an independent office exists specifically to resolve disputes over unauthorized transactions, account mismanagement, or poor service quality.

“The common man needs a safety net,” Zardari told officials during a briefing at Aiwan-e-Sadr. He emphasized that the Banking Mohtasib’s office should not just be a reactive body but a proactive one, reaching out to the furthest corners of the country to demystify the complaint process.

Currently, the gap between a customer facing an issue and the resolution mechanism is often widened by bureaucratic hurdles and a lack of clear communication from banks. Customers frequently struggle to navigate the internal grievance procedures of commercial banks, which often result in dead ends or lengthy, frustrating delays.

The President’s directive focuses on simplifying the path to justice. He wants the Mohtasib’s office to utilize digital platforms and regional outreach to ensure that even those with limited financial literacy can log a complaint without needing expensive legal help.

For the Banking Mohtasib, this mandate signals a shift in strategy. The office is now expected to move beyond its traditional role of adjudication and into a public-facing advocacy position.

Whether this effort translates into a tangible decrease in banking fraud or simply adds another layer of paperwork remains the real test. For now, the message from the presidency is clear: banks are expected to be more accountable, and the public deserves a faster, more accessible way to hold them to that standard.
