Council set to axe climate emergency declaration

The local council is poised to vote on scrapping its climate emergency declaration this Tuesday, a move that would effectively dismantle a policy framework adopted with unanimous support just four years ago.

The proposal, tabled by a bloc of backbench councillors, argues the declaration is now “symbolic” and diverts staff resources away from “core service delivery.” If passed, the council will become one of the first in the region to officially walk back its climate commitments, a decision that has already triggered a fierce standoff between local officials and environmental advocacy groups.

Critics of the policy argue the original declaration was a political statement rather than a fiscal plan. Council leader Marcus Thorne defended the potential reversal, pointing to a £4 million budget shortfall. “We’re facing a choice between maintaining essential social care programs and funding advisory boards for climate initiatives,” Thorne said. He didn’t specify which programs would receive the redirected funds.

Environmental campaigners view the move as a dangerous retreat. Protesters are expected to gather outside the town hall before the vote, carrying data that shows the council has failed to meet 60% of the emissions targets it set back in 2020.

For the residents, the impact remains unclear. The declaration currently mandates that all council planning decisions undergo a “climate impact assessment.” Axing the declaration would remove that requirement, allowing developers to bypass stricter sustainability standards currently enforced on new housing projects.

Local opposition councillors have vowed to block the motion, calling the timing “short-sighted.” They point out that the climate office costs less than 0.2% of the council’s total annual expenditure.

The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. With the ruling party holding a slim three-seat majority, the vote is expected to be decided by a handful of undecided members who have remained silent on the issue throughout the week.

If the motion passes, the council’s climate advisory board will be disbanded by the end of the month.
