The S&P 500 and Nasdaq retreated Tuesday as investors braced for a volatile cocktail of geopolitical tension and high-stakes corporate reporting. Wall Street’s momentum stalled, ending a brief period of optimism as traders weighed the fallout from fresh Iran sanctions and the looming shadow of Nvidia’s quarterly results.

The Nasdaq Composite led the decline, shedding 0.8% by midday, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.4%. Tech stocks—the primary drivers of this year’s rally—bore the brunt of the sell-off. Investors are trimming exposure to high-growth assets, wary that any disappointment from Nvidia could trigger a broader market correction.

Nvidia remains the center of gravity. With shares up over 150% this year, the chipmaker’s earnings report, due Wednesday, has become a litmus test for the entire artificial intelligence trade. Analysts are looking for more than just a revenue beat; they want confirmation that demand for Blackwell chips remains insatiable. Anything less than stellar guidance could pull the rug out from under the semiconductor sector.

“The market is priced for perfection,” said one senior strategist at a major brokerage house. “If Nvidia misses by even a fraction, the volatility will be immediate.”

Geopolitics added a layer of anxiety that computer algorithms couldn’t ignore. Following the recent escalation in the Middle East, the U.S. government signaled a new round of sanctions targeting Iran’s energy sector. While the immediate impact on global oil supply remains contained, the prospect of a wider regional conflict has kept a floor under crude prices, complicating the Federal Reserve’s inflation-fighting mission.

Higher energy costs threaten to keep the “last mile” of inflation sticky. If oil prices spike, the Fed’s path to rate cuts becomes significantly narrower. Markets are already recalibrating expectations, with some traders now betting on a more cautious approach from the central bank as they head into the final quarter of the year.

The rotation out of tech wasn’t a total flight to safety. Defensive sectors—utilities and consumer staples—saw modest gains, suggesting that institutional money is not leaving the market entirely, but rather moving toward safer ground.

For now, the focus shifts to Wednesday’s closing bell. With the S&P 500 hovering near its recent highs, the market’s next move depends entirely on whether Nvidia can justify its current valuation or if the tech rally is finally hitting a wall.
