The Punjab School Education Department has directed government schools to grow seasonal vegetables on their premises alongside regular educational activities. The move is aimed at making use of available school space while encouraging students and staff to engage with practical agricultural activities.
According to an official circular issued to school heads, schools have been instructed to make proper arrangements for cultivating and maintaining seasonal vegetables within their premises. Each school has also been asked to nominate a staff member responsible for supervising the cultivation process.
The designated staff member will oversee activities including planting, watering and general maintenance of the crops. Authorities have stressed that vegetables should be properly cared for and that schools must ensure the plants remain in good condition.
Schools where previous vegetable cultivation has been unsatisfactory have been instructed to undertake fresh cultivation. The department has also directed relevant staff to ensure timely watering and proper upkeep of the plants.
The initiative could also provide students with an opportunity to learn about gardening, food production, environmental responsibility and basic agricultural practices through hands-on activities.
Officials have emphasised that vegetable cultivation should take place alongside normal teaching activities and should not interfere with the schools’ primary educational responsibilities.
The directive reflects efforts to make available school spaces more productive while introducing students to practical activities related to agriculture and sustainability.
