British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has launched a new foundation dedicated to ensuring that children across the United Kingdom have access to high-quality music education.
Sheeran, who began songwriting at a young age after being encouraged by a teacher, said he hopes the initiative will help bridge gaps left by cuts in arts funding. To mark the launch, the Grammy Award–winning artist is visiting schools and youth groups in Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, and Belfast.
During a visit to a school in Wales on Thursday, Sheeran, joined by his longtime songwriting partner Amy Wadge, emphasized that music deserves recognition as a legitimate career path.
“Britain tends to push people towards careers in banking, tech, or finance,” Sheeran told pupils. “We’re here to show you it’s possible to succeed in music too. Both of us came through state schools, and all it takes is confidence and encouragement from teachers.”
Sheeran also shared his personal connection with Wales, recalling visits to Cardiff as a teenager to collaborate with Wadge — an experience he described as a “key stage” in his musical journey.
The foundation aims to provide resources, instruments, and opportunities for students in schools where access to music has been limited, with the broader goal of inspiring the next generation of musicians.
