The government has increased the price of petrol by Rs1.35 per liter, effective immediately. This latest adjustment, confirmed by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) late Wednesday, marks another cycle of rising fuel costs that continue to squeeze household budgets.

Motorists are now paying more at the pump, but the impact stretches far beyond individual fuel tanks. As transport costs climb, the price of basic commodities—already hovering at record highs—is expected to see a fresh ripple effect in local markets.

The finance ministry justified the hike by citing fluctuations in international oil markets and the need to maintain fiscal targets. While the government maintains that these adjustments are necessary to bridge the gap between global prices and local retail rates, the move offers little relief to a public already grappling with stagnant wages.

“We are just moving from one fuel crisis to the next,” said a local transporter in Rawalpindi, who warned that freight charges will likely rise by at least 5% by the weekend. “Every time the price goes up, we either pass the cost to the passenger or we lose money. There is no middle ground left.”

Analysts point out that this is the second consecutive increase in under a month. While the government often points to global supply chain volatility, the domestic impact remains localized and severe. Small businesses, which rely heavily on logistics, are already signaling that they cannot absorb these costs indefinitely.

The new rates were finalized after a review of the fortnightly pricing mechanism. While the price of high-speed diesel saw a marginal adjustment, the focus remains on the petrol hike, which directly affects the largest segment of the commuting population.

As the government continues to prioritize revenue stability through these price adjustments, the average citizen is left to navigate a shrinking disposable income. With no immediate signs of a cooling global market, the next review period—due in two weeks—is already being met with apprehension across the country.
