Elon Musk says artificial intelligence will be smarter than any single human by 2025, and by 2027, it will likely outperform the entire human collective.

The Tesla and xAI founder dropped the timeline during a recent exchange on X—the platform he owns—while discussing the rapid evolution of his own AI model, Grok. Musk has long predicted that digital intelligence would eventually eclipse biological limits, but he is now tightening the window on when that shift becomes reality.

The stakes are binary. If Musk is right, the global economy faces a labor market disruption unlike anything since the Industrial Revolution. If he is wrong, the industry may simply be hitting a temporary plateau in the scaling laws that have driven progress for the last decade.

Musk’s current estimate relies on the assumption that compute power and energy availability continue to double every few months. “AI will be the most disruptive force in history,” he told investors during a recent earnings call. He argues that the bottleneck is no longer the code, but the raw electricity required to feed the massive data centers powering these models.

Critics within the AI safety community, however, remain skeptical. They point to the “hallucination” problem and the lack of genuine reasoning capabilities as evidence that current large language models are merely statistical parrots, not sentient rivals. They argue that counting parameters or compute power ignores the fundamental mystery of human consciousness and intent.

Industry analysts have tracked Musk’s fluctuating predictions for years. In 2020, he famously claimed full self-driving cars were “one year away,” a promise that remains unfulfilled. Now, he’s applying that same aggressive optimism to AGI—artificial general intelligence.

Whether the 2027 deadline is a realistic forecast or another example of Musk’s penchant for hyperbole, the industry is moving at a pace that makes even the most conservative skeptics uneasy. For now, the world waits to see if the hardware can keep up with the ambition.
