Depression can affect much more than mood and emotional well-being. New research suggests that it may also influence driving behavior in older adults, potentially increasing the likelihood of risky actions behind the wheel.

A study published in JAMA Network Open found that adults aged 65 and older with depression showed more potentially dangerous driving behaviors than older adults without the condition.

Study Tracked Real-World Driving

Researchers studied 395 older adults who agreed to have their everyday driving monitored using data loggers installed in their vehicles.

The group included 85 people with depression and 310 people without depression. Participants were followed for an average of more than a year, allowing researchers to examine their actual driving patterns rather than relying only on self-reported behavior.

More Risky Driving Behaviors Observed

Older adults with depression showed higher levels of several risky driving behaviors. These included:

  • Hard braking
  • Hard cornering
  • Speeding
  • Unpredictable driving patterns

The association remained even after researchers accounted for factors such as sex, physical illnesses, antidepressant use and overall medication use.

Why Mental Health Matters Behind the Wheel

Driving requires attention, decision-making and the ability to respond appropriately to changing situations. Depression can affect several aspects of daily functioning, making mental health an important consideration when assessing driving safety in older adults.

The findings do not mean that every older person with depression is an unsafe driver. Instead, they suggest that mental health and driving behavior may need to be considered together, particularly when changes in driving habits become noticeable.

Screening May Help

The researchers suggested that interventions for older adults could include routine depression screening and driver rehabilitation programs.

Family members and caregivers can also pay attention to significant changes in driving behavior, such as sudden speeding, frequent hard braking or unpredictable maneuvers. Such changes may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

The Bottom Line

Depression may be linked to riskier driving among older adults. The findings highlight the importance of recognizing mental health concerns alongside physical health and driving ability as people age.

Identifying and treating depression, while also addressing driving safety when needed, may help older adults maintain both their well-being and independence.
