Seven people are dead after a three-story residential building collapsed early Tuesday in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, a neighborhood densely packed with students preparing for competitive exams. Rescue crews spent hours pulling victims from the twisted metal and pulverized concrete, while local officials warn the death toll may rise as the search continues.

The collapse occurred at roughly 4:00 a.m., catching most residents in their sleep. Neighbors reported hearing a thunderous crack before the structure pancaked. By dawn, the narrow lanes of the area were choked with ambulances and earth-moving equipment, struggling to navigate the cramped geography of the district.

“The building just folded,” said Rajesh Kumar, a local shopkeeper who arrived on the scene minutes after the crash. “People were screaming from underneath the debris. We tried to pull bricks away with our bare hands, but it was too much.”

Preliminary reports suggest the building was an older structure undergoing unauthorized renovations. Municipal authorities have faced long-standing criticism for failing to enforce building codes in Mukherjee Nagar, where landlords frequently add extra floors to accommodate the massive influx of students seeking affordable housing.

The Delhi Fire Service deployed ten fire tenders to the site. Senior police officials confirmed that the owner of the building has been detained for questioning, though formal charges remain pending as investigators look for evidence of structural negligence.

For the thousands of students living in the area, the tragedy has sparked immediate outcry regarding safety standards. Many live in cramped, converted basements or aging tenements that lack basic fire exits or structural integrity.

“We pay rent to live in these death traps because we have no choice,” said Ankit, a 22-year-old student who lives two blocks from the site. “Today it was them. Tomorrow, it could be any of us.”

As the rescue operation shifts to clearing the remaining rubble, the municipal corporation has promised a structural audit of the surrounding blocks. For the families of the seven victims, however, the promise comes too late.
