Local clinic faces probe after reports of hazardous waste dumping

Environmental inspectors swarmed the outskirts of the Northside Industrial District this morning, acting on whistleblower reports that a private medical facility has been illegally disposing of biohazardous waste in local drainage systems.

The investigation centers on St. Jude’s Urgent Care, where former staff members allege that used syringes, blood-stained bandages, and expired pharmaceutical vials were dumped into municipal sewers rather than processed through regulated incineration channels. For residents living near the district, the news confirms months of suspicion regarding foul odors and unexplained debris near the drainage outlets.

“We’ve been complaining about the smell and the colored runoff for weeks,” said Sarah Miller, a local resident whose property borders the industrial zone. “The city kept telling us it was just runoff from the nearby construction, but construction crews don’t leave medical waste behind.”

State environmental protection officers spent four hours on-site Tuesday, sealing off two primary disposal bins and seizing internal logbooks. While the clinic’s management has officially declined to comment, an attorney representing the facility issued a brief email stating they are “cooperating fully” with the inquiry.

The stakes are high for the clinic. Under state health codes, improper disposal of “red bag” medical waste—which includes materials potentially contaminated with infectious agents—carries heavy fines and the immediate risk of a suspended operating license. Beyond the legal fallout, the local health department has initiated water testing in the surrounding area to determine if the groundwater has been compromised.

This isn’t the first time the facility has come under scrutiny. State records show the clinic received a formal warning last November regarding improper sharps storage, though inspectors at the time found no evidence of external dumping.

Investigators are expected to release preliminary water quality results by Friday. Until then, the clinic remains open, though the presence of hazmat-suited crews near the rear loading docks suggests the inquiry is far from over.
