PANAJI: Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar, known for his powerful performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, died in Goa on Thursday following a cardiac arrest. He was 75. Patekar was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and taken to Manipal Hospital, where medical teams attempted to revive him.
Dr Shekhar Salkar, a senior doctor at the hospital, said cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered for approximately 45 minutes, but the actor could not be saved. His son, Malhar Patekar, also confirmed the death to Indian media.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, the actor began his career in theatre before entering Hindi cinema with Gaman in 1978. He rose to prominence through acclaimed performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa and Khamoshi: The Musical. Patekar earned three National Film Awards during his career, including Best Actor for Krantiveer and Best Supporting Actor for Parinda and Agni Sakshi.
He also appeared in popular films including Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Raajneeti and the Welcome franchise. Beyond acting, Patekar directed Prahaar and remained active in Marathi cinema, receiving widespread recognition for his performance in Natsamrat. The Padma Shri recipient leaves behind a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades in Indian cinema.
