National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has sought nominations of lawmakers for the formation of a 30-member parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. The proposed committee will include 20 members from the National Assembly and 10 from the Senate. The initiative aims to bring political parties together to discuss changes in the electoral system and develop consensus on future reforms.
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that the National Assembly had approved a motion for the formation of the committee. He added that the process of finalising members’ names was still underway and that the Speaker would issue an official notification once the nominations were completed.
According to the proposed arrangement, the government and opposition will both have representation in the committee. The government is expected to nominate 15 members, while the opposition will nominate five members from the National Assembly, with additional representation from the Senate. The distribution of seats will take into account the parliamentary strength of political parties.
The committee will discuss electoral reforms, transparency in the election process and ways to improve public confidence in the electoral system. The government has also expressed its willingness to consider practical suggestions from opposition parties to build political consensus on the issue.
