A Saudi-led airstrike on a residential home in northern Yemen reportedly killed nine members of the same family, including five children under the age of 10, according to accounts provided by relatives.
The attack took place on October 18 in Yemen’s northern Saada region. Relatives said the bombing struck the family’s home, causing the building to collapse and trapping people beneath the rubble.
According to the family, the house had also been targeted the previous day, raising further concerns about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
An investigation cited in reporting by The New York Times examined video footage of the aftermath. Munitions experts who reviewed the footage indicated that a 500-pound bomb supplied by the United States may have been used.
A casualty list provided by the Houthi-affiliated health ministry reportedly supported the relatives’ accounts of the deaths.
The incident has renewed attention on civilian casualties in the Saudi-led, U.S.-assisted military campaign against Yemen’s Houthi movement.
The attack also raises questions about the protection of civilians and the impact of military operations on residential areas.
