Cristiano Ronaldo’s Future in Saudi Arabia Uncertain Amid “Difficult” Negotiations

Cristiano Ronaldo’s chapter with Saudi Arabian football may be nearing its end. Just hours after the conclusion of the Saudi Pro League season—with Al Nassr finishing third and once again without a trophy—Ronaldo left fans stunned with a cryptic social media post that read:

“This chapter is over.”

Now, according to a source familiar with the situation, officials from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) are engaged in “difficult negotiations” to convince the 40-year-old Portuguese star to remain in the Kingdom.

Potential Transfer to Al Hilal or Al Ahli

The source, speaking to AFP, revealed that a possible transfer to Al Hilal is under discussion, which could allow Ronaldo to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for June 14 in the United States. Al Ahli, the reigning AFC Champions League winner, is also being considered.

PIF, the oil-rich sovereign wealth fund backing Saudi Arabia’s aggressive sports ambitions, owns several top-tier Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli. Ronaldo’s next move could remain within this network.

Legacy in the Saudi Pro League

Ronaldo signed with Al Nassr in early 2023, becoming the face of a historic wave of high-profile signings aimed at transforming the Saudi Pro League into a global football destination. While he topped the scoring charts this season with 25 goals, he failed to secure any domestic or international silverware.

“Ronaldo’s presence has been a key factor in developing the Saudi league. He opened the doors for elite and young players to consider Saudi Arabia,” the PIF source stated.

Yet his club’s failure to deliver titles may be pushing the legendary forward to reconsider his future. His contract with Al Nassr expires at the end of next month.

 Club World Cup Opportunity

To accommodate the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, a special transfer window will open from June 1 to June 10. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently acknowledged:

“There are discussions… Ronaldo might play for one of the teams at the Club World Cup.”

This potential appearance at the Club World Cup, possibly with Al Hilal, could be one final global stage for Ronaldo before he winds down his career. Meanwhile, his long-time rival Lionel Messi is confirmed to play at the tournament with Inter Miami.

A Symbol of Saudi Sports Ambition

Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia marked a turning point in the country’s sporting ambitions. He was the first of many European stars to sign lucrative deals, and his presence paved the way for names like Neymar, Karim Benzema, and Sadio Mané to join the league.

Yet, despite the glamour, challenges remain. Neymar, for instance, ended his brief stint with Al Hilal due to injury after only seven appearances.

Now, with Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, retaining a global icon like Ronaldo—even for one more season—could help maintain international attention and credibility.

 Final Thoughts

Cristiano Ronaldo’s next step is still uncertain, but one thing is clear: Saudi Arabia wants him to stay. Whether it’s a move to Al Hilal, Al Ahli, or even a short stint for the Club World Cup, the Kingdom hopes to keep one of football’s biggest icons on its pitch just a little longer.

As the transfer window nears and discussions intensify, all eyes remain on Ronaldo—once again at the center of global football.
