Recent May Snowfall Brings Back Winter Chill in Gilgit-Baltistan

CHILAS: In an unexpected turn of weather, several parts of Gilgit-Baltistan witnessed snowfall in May, bringing back frosty conditions to the region despite the typically warm season.

Tourists in Diamer and Chilas were treated to a surprise as snowflakes blanketed the area, transforming the landscape and dropping temperatures sharply.

The mercury plunged below freezing at popular high-altitude locations such as Babusar Top, Nanga Parbat, and Battugah Top. Due to the snowfall, the Babusar-Naran highway was closed to traffic. Meanwhile, landslides disrupted traffic flow on the Karakoram Highway at Kohistan’s Jajal Point.

Babusar Road, which links Naran in Kaghan Valley to Chilas in Gilgit-Baltistan, had just reopened after being closed for seven months. Typically, Babusar Top and Pass remain inaccessible from November to June because of heavy snowfall.

Located at an elevation of 13,700 feet, Babusar Top is a well-known tourist destination. Visitors heading to Gilgit-Baltistan often choose this route to experience its cool weather and spectacular views.
